1. Study Skills & Study Plan
- Study skills: Techniques used to help with learning, understanding, and retaining information.
- Study plan: A structured schedule outlining study time for each subject or topic.
- Benefits: Improves organisation, reduces stress, increases productivity.
- Time management: Prioritise tasks, allocate specific time blocks, avoid procrastination.
2. Study Styles
- A study style is the learner’s preferred way of studying.
- Examples:
- Visual (learn through images/diagrams)
- Auditory (learn by listening)
- Reading/Writing (learn best with notes and text)
- Kinesthetic (learn through movement and doing)
3. Study Strategies
- SQ3R Method: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review
- Mind Mapping for summarising
- Summarising and highlighting for recall
- Practice tests for exam preparation
4. Examination Writing Skills
- Preparation: Revise thoroughly, stay healthy, get enough rest
- Skills: Read instructions, highlight verbs like explain, discuss, manage time, write clearly
- Answering tips: Start with known questions, don’t leave blanks, keep time
5. Goal Setting for Academic Success
- Set SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound
- Short-term: daily or weekly targets
- Medium-term: term goals (e.g., pass all subjects)
- Long-term: Matric exemption, university entrance
6. SAQA
- South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA): Oversees qualifications and standards, ensures quality in education and training, helps with understanding career/study paths
